Our first social will be on Wednesday the 8th. Everyone meet up at outside Portland at 1:45 to leave at 2:00 on the dot. We're going to the Ice Centre for a skate around (so everyone knows where it is/how to get there/get's a feel for the place; cost £4) and then onto a bar afterwards (so we can all get to know each other, obviously).
We're using a card system for lessons (see below), so we'll be taking money for the first lesson at this time.
If you are coming to the social please reply to this email by midnight on Monday and let us know. We need give the Ice Centre an idea of how many of us will be there.

The first lesson will be on Wednesday the 15th. We'll be meeting at Portland again (time TBA) in case anyone couldn't come to the social and doesn't know where the Ice Centre is. You can skate around from 1:30-3:30 for £4. Lessons times are

beginners 2:00-2:30
advanced 2:30-3:00

Lessons are an additional £2.50, so you can skate for an hour and a half and have a lesson with a professional coach for £6.50. All rates are discounted from the usual Ice Centre rates.

Please note that after the first lesson we will not be meeting outside of Portland and you will have to make your own way to the Ice Centre.

Since you will be paying the society for lessons, you don't want to have to pay at the gate to get in. To prevent this we're using a card system so that the Ice Centre staff know you have already paid for entry and will let you through. Because we won't be meeting outside Portland after the first lesson we'll be taking money for the next session when the current one ends. Otherwise you won't have a card and won't be able to get through. And because I have a feeling I didn't put that too clearly:

+lesson A: get through using card
hand in card to committee member
                     skate/ join in lesson
pay for lesson B and get card so you can get in next week

+lesson B: get through using card you paid for at lesson A
hand in card to committee member
                     skate/ join in lesson
I'm sure you get the idea

Note: don't panic! This system won't be in operation for the social and will only be in partial operation af the first lesson, since we haven't met most of you yet to give you cards. I'm just letting you know how it works!

Okay, I think I've bombarded you with enough information! Look forward to seeing you at the sessions!

The University of Nottingham Ice Skating Society (ISS) is a new society for the 08/09 academic year.

Nottingham is home to the National Ice Center and we will be taking advantage of this by focussing on skating lessons, in order for members to achieve their Skate UK grades. We will also have socials and other events.

At this time we will are offering discounted skating lessons for beginners but we are looking into getting lessons for those who have already completed some of their Skate UK grades.

Currently lessons are as follows:

Wednesday afternoons: 2:00-2:30 and 2:30-3:00
Price: £6.50 (including skate hire and coaching)

We are looking into one hour lessons as well as those for skaters with previous experience.

This is where to ask questions, post suggestions and make requests.

I'm assuming most of you aren't normally livejournal users, so you'll have to post with the 'anonymous' box ticked. In which case, leave your name and email address somewhere in your comment so we can get back to you. We can't help you if we don't know who you are. If you forget to do this, click 'reply to this comment' and put your name and email addy in there. Comments are screened so that you don't broadcast your email address to half of LJ.

Name: Jen Church

Bio: Hi, I’m Jen. I’m a third year zoology student and president of the society. Last year I was a member of the University Ice Hockey Club and was surprised that the University didn’t have an ice skating society. The Society is new this year and I hope that along with the rest of the committee I can make it a fun and enjoyable Wednesday afternoon for you all. Make sure you make the most of our cheap lessons. I had to pay much more when I was doing my Skate UK grades! Have fun and I hope to see you all on Wednesday afternoons.

Bio: Hi, I'm Ali. I'm a second year Biochem student, though I'm currently taking a year out to work. In my role as Secretary it's my job to make sure that everything runs smoothly and keep you all up-to-date with what's going on with the Society, so if you want to know what's happening and where I'm the one to ask!
Despite being on the committee I'm not an experienced skater; like most of you I've only been skating a few times and I'm really looking forward to learning how to do it properly. It might sound odd, but I think that's a good thing; I remember my first Fresher's Fayre, wondering if the clubs and societies took beginners and wary of joining because I thought everyone would be ten times better than me and it'd be really embarassing. But for this year at least, some of the committee are on the same level as the regular members.
Of course, as well as working for the society, I want something out of it; I want to learn to skate well and I'd love to make some new friends and have fun.

I look forward to seeing you all at the sessions.

Take care,

Bio: Hey i'm Steph :) I'm studying Veterinary Medicine at the moment on the SB campus and am just about to go into my third year out of 5! I managed to bag myself a place on the Ice Skating Society as the Sutton Bonington rep which means that I'll be meeting with students on the SB campus each week to take them skating and also help promote the society there as well as on UP. I hope that being on this committee will help me gain more responsibility and leadership and I can't wait to get to know everyone that joins our amazing society! You can email me if you need me (or alternatively find me on facebook!) See you all soon!"
